In the Classroom

5th Grade:

Math - Students have been exploring how multiplication and division work hand-in-hand! We used ratio tables and area models as visual tools to help break down numbers and solve division problems with confidence.

Ask Your Child - Can you show me how to use a ratio table or an area model to divide?

Science - We continued our space systems unit by creating models of Earth’s rotation and revolution. Students investigated how these planetary movements directly create the natural patterns we experience every day, like day and night and the cycle of the seasons.

ELA - We are continuing our journey back to the Depression Era through our novel, Esperanza Rising. Students are learning how to use text evidence to analyze characters’ reactions and craft well organized paragraphs to communicate the reactions.

6th Grade:

Science - We dove deeper into our new vocabulary for our genetics unit.  Students are learning about alleles, genotypes, phenotypes, homozygous, heterozygous, etc.  We had a special guest from the CT Humane Society come in and do a presentation about genetics and its influence on dog breeds.

7th Grade:

Science - Students have explored chemical bonding and are in the process of synthesizing information to determine how atoms finally bond to form molecules.

SS - Students worked hard this week on their Hammurabi’s Code in class. This was due Thursday and worth a test grade. On Wednesday, October 14th, students have a quiz on Chapter 4 Lesson 2. Quizlet and study guide have been provided.

Math - The regular classes had a quiz this week in the middle of our proportional reasoning unit, while the accelerated class is working on finishing the unit with a test next week. Don’t forget that Khan Academy is a great resource and has the unit that matches where we are in our book!

Spanish - Some students are memorizing parts of the poem “Versos Sencillos” by Jose Marti.  Others took a quiz on how to say they like or love certain foods.  Next week is the chapter 3A test, so check Google Classroom for details.

8th Grade:

Science - How did a wild predator become man’s best friend? In 8th grade science, students are stepping into the shoes of evolutionary biologists as we explore our unit driving question: How are dogs related to wolves?

So far, students have traveled back in time - analyzing the fossil record and geologic timelines to discover how ancient life left behind clues about modern organisms. Moving forward, we are expanding our investigation by examining snapshots of evidence from comparative anatomy, embryology, and molecular biology. Soon, students will dive into the core mechanisms of evolution to explore how natural selection, adaptation, and speciation shape the living world around us.

You can support your scientist at home by asking them about the driving question and seeing what evidence they’ve uncovered so far!

Student Government:

Student Government’s Breast Cancer fundraiser was a huge success. We sold out of all our bling in 20 minutes! We raised $380! We have begun to plan our spirit week for the end of October. Stay tuned

School Counselor:

This week, 8th grade students attended an in-school presentation for the Sound School on Friday Oct. 9th. Students will attend two more in-school presentations later this month to learn about high school options. These sessions offer students a helpful overview of what each school provides.

In-School Student Presentations for the rest of the Month:

  • Middletown Vo-Ag: October 19, 2026

  • Vinal Tech: October 29, 2026

Parent & Family Open House Dates: If your child is interested in learning more about one of these schools, we encourage families to attend their upcoming Open House:

  • The Sound School: October 22, 2026 5:00-7:30pm

  • ECA: November 17, 2026 6:30-8:00pm

  • Vinal Tech: November 19, 2026  5:00-7:00pm

  • (Note: Open House dates for Middletown Vo-Ag will be shared once finalized.)

Looking Ahead to Spring: All 8th graders will listen to a presentation and take a tour of the elective classes at The Morgan School, followed by an evening Open House for families. Dates will be announced in the spring.

Please reach out if you have any questions!
